Although virtual visitations and remote funeral services aren’t new, they are becoming part of the ‘new normal’ in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ever since social distancing orders were implemented, all businesses have had to significantly change the way they operate. Events such as visitations, funeral services and even graveside ceremonies are no different. “The graveside services allow for more distancing, but many families are choosing to do that service at a later date and time,” says Janice Smallwood, co-owner along with her husband, JD, at Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. & Monuments

“As always, it is an honor to serve our community. Even during these difficult times.”

Options for such services regarding these changes may be new for many. Here are three important things to know regarding planning and attending funerals where social distancing is concerned.

  1. Streaming services allow for versatility and ease of attendance. Platforms like Facebook Live offer instant accessibility for attendees, no matter where they are in the world. These options are available for people who could not travel or are otherwise unable to attend. Streaming a funeral service allows people the chance to pay their respects remotely, no matter where they are.
  2. In-person visitations are still available but are limited in the amount of people who can attend at a given time. We allow family members the time they need with their loved one, as well as additional family members and friends, provided there are no more than 10 people in the funeral home at a given time.
  3. Drive-up services have become another option. With this method, people can maintain social distancing and still see the family, flowers, pictures, and pay their respects. The building design at Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. & Monuments makes it easy to accomplish this.

Standard indoor services continue at Norberg, as well as monuments sales, prearrangements, and jewelry purchases. “The funeral home is still operating under the 10 or less rule for inside services.” Smallwood continues. “Livestreaming services are something that we will continue to offer. We have received a lot of good feedback from families and visitors regarding this.”
