About a week ago, I spent an evening attending the Pheasants Forever banquet. It was most enjoyable. The food was great, the atmosphere was also great, and the prizes and raffle items were very appealing.
I had my eye on a 20-gauge over-under that was really to my liking because I was getting ready to go to Georgia to hunt quail with my son. Well, it was not to be. There were still several firearms that I would have liked to own, but it didn’t happen.
I really like the Pheasants Forever organization. Our local group has given time and monies to support the youths of our county. When our PHS Sportsman’s Club had a trap shoot, PF donated shells to support our event. They also sponsored a guided pheasant hunt for a dozen youthful hunters. This is one reason why I like it when Bureau County hunters support the Pheasants Forever banquet.
• Well, nine days from now, you will have a chance to support another worthwhile organization. The Illinois Valley Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited will be hosting their annual banquet. It will be on Friday, March 20, at the Cider Mill in rural Princeton. The doors will open at 5 p.m. for games, raffles and a social hour. The meat and fish buffet will commence at 6:30 p.m.
This fundraising event features a dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor equipment, artwork and collectibles.
One of the valuable gifts usually presented each year was the Gordy Shipp Memorial Award. It will not be presented this year due to the fact that no names were submitted. Another memorial to be given away is the Bob Stevens Memorial Award. Many of us remember the countless hours Bob spent to make this banquet a success.
