DIXON — A Dixon woman accused of stealing more than $100,000 from a 72-year-old Sterling woman over the course of three months is facing even more felony charges.
Michelle Marks, 46, of Dixon, former owner of Miss Michelle’s Psychic Reader & Spiritual Advisor, was arrested June 28, 2017, after the woman went to Sterling police to report she was being scammed.
Because the business was in Dixon, Marks was charged in Lee County court with two counts of exploitation of an elderly person, one for “knowingly and by deception” gaining control of more than $15,000, the other for more than $50,000, according to court documents. Each carries 4 to 15 years in prison.
She also was charged with theft of more than $100,000 but less than $500,000, which carries 3 to 7 years; and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a FOID card, both misdemeanors.
On July 9, State’s Attorney Matt Klahn amended those charges to include two more counts of theft, one accusing Marks of stealing more than $5,000, and the other of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000. Each also is punishable by 3 to 7 years.
The thefts occurred between Nov. 10, 2016, and Jan. 17, 2017, the documents say.
Marks, free since posting $15,000 of her $150,000 bond on July 7, 2017, has a status hearing Aug. 16.
In January 2015, when she opened an office in Princeton, Marks told the Bureau County Republican that she was a fourth-generation psychic who had been doing readings for 25 years.
