Ottawa driver involved in Interstate 80 crash

OTTAWA — A vehicle driven by an Ottawa woman, whom police say was under the influence of drugs, drove off Interstate 80 eastbound in Ottawa March 5 and struck a vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the highway. According to an Illinois State Police District 17 police report, Cheryl Shannon, 57, was traveling on the interstate near mile marker 91 when her Pontiac Grand Prix entered the right shoulder and struck a Chevrolet Silverado with a gooseneck trailer, which was driven by Sergi Onyshchenko, 27, of Middleboro, Massachusetts. Onyshchenko was not injured. However, Shannon was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Shannon was charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, improper lane usage, and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The accident remains under investigation by Illinois State Police District 17 and Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
